Toy Fox Terrier

Next Breed: Toy Manchester Terrier Previous Breed: Tosa

The Toy Fox Terrier is a miniature version of the Smooth Fox Terrier. This lively little dog is calmer than the typically smooth or wirehaired fox terrier and is a better choice for the less active family.

History

The Toy Fox Terrier was developed in the early 1900s in the United States. It was developed through careful breeding of the Smooth Fox Terrier with Chihuahuas, Italian Greyhounds and English Toy Terriers. Originally, the Toy Fox Terrier was intended to be used to as a ratter. Eventually, he became a beloved family companion. In 2003, the American Kennel Club accepted the Toy Fox Terrier.

Appearance and Size

The Toy Fox Terrier is a smaller version of the Smooth Fox Terrier with a docked tail and a narrow muzzle. The ears are erect and V shaped. The coat of the Toy Fox Terrier is short, smooth and white with black, tan or black and tan markings. The adult Toy Fox Terrier stands around 10 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 4 to 7 pounds.

Personality

When compared to other fox terriers, the Toy Fox Terrier is not as lively and a little calmer. Still a terrier, this little dog is enthusiastic and still loves the chase, especially when it involved small, quick little animals or birds.

I have owned 4 TFT's and love the breed. They are excellent mousers and kill rats longer than the TFT's. They love to dig in mole hills and catch many moles.

They are tough dogs, when we go ride our horses the TFT's love to come with us; most of the time they don't want to ride on the horse with us unless they get stuck in black berry bushes. Then they do want to ride.

My boys LOVE to ride in the car and when I am on the tractor, they go nuts unless they can ride on the tractor with me.

I have found they can be hard to house train, but with a lot of concentrated effort, it can be done.

They are very smart and are super quick at problem solving.

My cats are all larger than TFT's yet they all play together well. It is hilarious to watch the dogs and cats play. They wrestle and roll around with each other, they run and pounce on each other. The dogs can go almost everywhere the cats go, including climbing some kinds of trees.

They are entertaining, affectionate and wonderful doggies. I can NOT imagine not having a TFT in my home. My Great Dane loves them, my Central Asian Sheep Dog loves them, my cats love them and my horses love them.

As with any dog, make sure you are getting a well bred dog and not a puppy mill dog. Buy from a reputable breeder or a family breeder, NEVER buy a dog from a pet store.

Just 2 left. There are 3 playing because we are holding one for her new owner. They love the outdoors as you can see. Bella is the one that's running around like crazy and playing with our big dog. Truman is the biggest one and Dolly is the other one. They have discovered their voices and are still a little shocked when sounds come out of their mouth. They have grown up so fast and we will surely miss them.
