Saint Bernard
The Saint Bernard, savior of the Swiss Alps, is one of the most readily recognized dogs. Though the legend of the St. Bernard's devotion to rescuing people stranded in the Alps is true, the brandy barrel around his neck is just a myth.
History
The history of the breed is disputed. What is commonly accepted is that Van Rooyen used two ridged, rough-coated bitches from the Swellendam district brought to him by the Rev. Charles Helm in 1879. Van Rooyen crossed these bitches with members of his pack, noting that their ridged progeny excelled at lion hunting.
Appearance and Size
The St. Bernard is a very large dog with a large head. A full-grown male can weigh between 160 and 260 lb (73–117 kg) or more and the approximate height at the withers is 27½ inches to 35½ inches (70 to 90 cm). The coat can be either smooth or rough, with the smooth coat close and flat. The rough coat is dense but flat, and more profuse around the neck and legs. The coat is typically a red colour with white, or sometimes a mahogany brindle with white. Black shading is usually found on the face and ears. The tail is long and heavy, hanging low with the end turned up slightly. The dark eyes should have naturally tight lids, with "haws only slightly visible". Ectropion or entropion are listed in the breed standard as serious faults, indicating that the dog should not be bred. Other faults include aggressiveness, flews of the lower jaw turning outwards, eyelids too loose, curly coat, and sway back or roach back. See the article Dog terminology for an explanation of terms. Faults do not always indicate that a dog would not be a good companion, only that the dog should not be bred.
Personality
The St. Bernard is intelligent and loyal to his owner. The breed is powerful, but gentle and seems to have a sixth sense in regard to impending danger, especially upcoming blizzards or avalanches.

Arizona Saint Bernard Rescue dogs 9-30-2011
The Arizona Saint Bernard Rescue needs YOUR help in sharing the need for foster or adoptive homes for the surprisingly large amount of Saints available in rescue in Arizona. Too many dogs, too few homes willing to undertake the effort required to provide the home needed for a giant breed dog. It was my pleasure to make this slideshow to help promote this need for special homes for these gentle giants with the Arizona Saint Bernard Rescue....SPREAD THE WORD! In loving memory of "Bessie". Saint Bernard (I'm a Dog/Come Play with Me)
I always wanted a St. Bernard. But there was always someone around -- mothers and wives, mostly -- to talk me out of it. As my close friend and associate, Doctor Swanstein says, with a St. Bernard "You don't need a pooh bag, you need a shopping cart..." We met a Saint Bernard during our Sunday dog walk. His name is Asland. What an awesome guy. Very friendly and playful. Now honestly, St. Bernards do not make the best disc dogs ... the activity is probably not right for them ... but that doesn't mean a Saint

This dog was found as a stray and we are considering giving him a foster home. He's calm, likes people and other dogs, it looks like he was someones pet as he likes to sit on your lap and and sits on the chair like he's done it many times before!. He has a homely looking face. FYI: This video was taken with a Nikon S8100 digital camera
St. Bernards Suffering in Johnstown, PA July 30, 2009: Thayne tries to get help for the dog
Thayne tries to help two suffering and matted St. Bernards in Johnstown, PA, taking the advice of DA Consiglio and Judge Doyle, who insisted that Thayne would have gotten help for Doogie if she'd just called the cops. Let's see how that works here in Pennsylvania! The dog pays the price. Now this dog could be dead even as we type. Because no one will do the right thing for him. Horrendous! Not only are the cops in PA horribly behind the times, but police are this way in many communities nationwide. Stop tol
