I would consult your Vet on this one as they may be able to prescribe something. Safe travels. Best, Steve
Give her a childrens Benedryl. Thank you for keeping her in the cabin with you. Test it first to see how it affects her. Benedryl is my best answer. It will make her tired and relaxed and wont hurt. Have a safe and great flight. Lynda
Your vet can prescribe a sedative for her, if the benadryl doesn't work. And make sure you consult your vet for the proper dose of Benadryl to give her first anyhow!
The most common prescription sedative for situations like this is one called Acepromazine, commonly just called "Ace." It can be given by mouth about 30 minutes before the start of travel (you want the sedative to take effect BEFORE she starts getting stressed), and generally lasts at least 6 hours. Some dogs are more sensitive to Ace, and may remain sedated for almost a full 24 hours. Also, older dogs and certain breeds of dogs are more sensitive to Ace (such as Greyhounds and many other sight-hound breeds), and can have serious side effects if not used with caution, so either get a different sedative for them such as Valium, or at least make sure they can be closely monitored while under the effects of the medication.
Ace is also commonly used as a sedative for dogs that freak out about going to the groomer's, the vet's, or for thunderstorm/firework phobias.
In addition to the vet suggestions above, consider Rescue Remedy, a short-acting holistic alternative that works in reducing stress in some dogs. There are also some physical aids, like Premier's Calming Cap or the Anxiety Wrap (you can find these in our store, or elsewhere online) which have worked with my dog in certain stressful situations. Good luck!
