Answers to this question:

well it depends on everything around you. are you a dog or a cat person? do you want a small animal? do you live in an apartment? do you live somewhere where a big breed dog can run around?
for an apartment: a bird, fish, lizard, cat, small dog
House: cat, big dog, medium dog, etc.
i have a small Poodle and hes a great companion! if you want a small dog, i suggest:
Poodle, yorkie, dachsund, shnauzer, Bichon Frise, jack russel, Pomeranian, Cocker Spaniel, etc.
